Local Coordinator for Ireland Sought for European Mediation Network Initiative (EMNI)

The European Mediation Network Initiative (EMNI) seeks a Local Coordinator for Ireland. This voluntary role, which is a two year position, will entail working closely with the MII Board Member of EMNI in the gathering and dissemination of information about mediation in Ireland.

The European Mediation Network Initiative (EMNI) serves as a meeting point for organisations interested in the use of mediation in Europe. Its aim is to be a network of networks, an organisation for organisations that will compliment rather than compete with existing mediation organisations.

EMNI supports the development of mediation and related alternative dispute resolution methods and the establishment of mediation practices in all relevant fields of activity throughout Europe through the following activities:

  1. Networking with mediation organisations and associations in Europe and beyond
  2. Promoting dialogue among practitioners, users of mediation services, policy makers and researchers;
  3. Promoting an international exchange of information, know-how and mutual support;
  4. Supporting the development of effective mediation policies, services and legislation;
  5. Exploring and developing the theoretical basis of mediation and promotion of research;
  6. Supporting the development of principles, ethics, standards and good practice;
  7. Supporting public education aimed at increasing awareness about mediation;
  8. Lobbying European and international institutions or organisations, including the UNCITRAL, the Council of Europe, the European Union and relevant non-governmental organisations.

The Mediators’ Institute of Ireland (MII) has been actively involved with EMNI for the last three years. We have a seat on the EMNI Board which includes representatives of Mediators and mediation bodies from across Europe. The MII also has a seat on the five-person Executive Committee (X-Com) of EMNI and is involved in monthly teleconferences with a view to further developing the network of Mediators across Europe.

Each country is now being requested to identify a designated Local Coordinator in addition to their Board Member. This is a voluntary role and the coordinators will initially take on the role for a period of two years. The tasks involved in the role include:

  1. Sourcing contributions for the EMNI website in relation to relevant country news, issues, activities, events or other local information.
  2. Advising the Board Member from Ireland of any important matter of relevance to EMNI.
  3. Informing local Mediators through the MII about EMNI and EMNI membership.
  4. Assisting in co-ordinating local EMNI activities.
  5. Participating in Local Coordinator meetings (the Delegation) with the EMNI Board which will usually occur annually.

If you are interested in this voluntary role, please contact Treasa Kenny, treasa.kenny@themii.ie, the MII Council representative on the Board of EMNI.
