How to Become a Mediator through the Family Mediation Route
Becoming a Certified Member
- Successful completion of a 60-hour, MII approved or equivalent course
and
- Satisfactory assessment by co-mediation comprising a minimum of 15 hours co-mediation demonstrating appropriate level of skills in relation to the Certified Member competencies with an accredited MII co-mediator. (see Certified Member evaluation form)
Becoming a Practitioner Member
To progress from Certified to Practitioner Member through the Family route, the following requirements must be satisfied:
Experience:
- 100 hours of face-to-face mediation:
of which there must be at least 12 mediations (of which 8 must be couples) with at least 4 to agreement (of which 3 must be couples/family, 2 including a detailed parenting plan)
or
- 75 hours of face-to-face mediation:
of which there must be at least 6 mediations and satisfactory completion of a 60-hour MII Approved Practitioner course in Family Mediation which includes 6 role-plays.
and
- Attend 3 sharing and learning meetings
- Present a case at one Sharing and Learning group
- Attend 15 hours case supervision with an MII Practitioner Member of 3-years standing
- Maintain a log of mediations
- Pass a written assessment of 4 case submissions in accordance with Practitioner Member competencies (see Practitioner member evaluation form on website)
- Sign off by an MII Practitioner Member (not the Supervisor) of live observation of one case and
- Satisfactory completion and sign off of a Family Mediation Accreditation Journal with an approved MII Supervisor
- Attend an MII Approved 64 hour of specific case knowledge
- You will also be required to have fulfilled your CPD obligations
Practising Certificate
The MII practising certificate is issued on an annual calendar basis and only Members who hold a current MII practising certificate are approved by the MII to mediate.
