Welcome to The Mediators' Institute of Ireland (the MII). The MII has a broad base of members ranging from accredited, practising Mediators, working in greatly varying fields of dispute resolution, to trainee Mediators and individuals and organisations with an interest in mediation.
The MII provides a professional home for Mediators and an information base for individuals and organisations with an interest in mediation and alternative dispute resolution. It is an independent, accrediting body for Mediators and mediation training programmes.
The MII Vision for our Institute is to be the leading professional association for Mediators in Ireland, where we provide excellent services and internationally recognised accreditation standards to our members; to be recognised by the public as being the primary body associated with mediation in Ireland, where we provide information to clients on the access to and information on Mediators and mediation practices.
MII Vision Statement
The MII is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of quality mediation in all areas of dispute resolution. The MII accredits Mediators and mediation training programmes in Ireland and Northern Ireland. It has accessible and transparent assessment procedures, registration procedures, Complaints and Disciplinary procedures and a comprehensive Code of Ethics and Practice which provides clarity and guidance to both Mediators and service-users in relation to the ethics and use of mediation.
The MII recognises and values the contributions to mediation from people across all areas of society and actively encourages learning and participation at all levels of mediation.
Membership is open to all - from mediation professionals to those who have a general interest in mediation but with no wish to practice.
There are many reasons for taking up MII membership including:
The MII has Six Categories of Members:
Practitioner, Certified and Associate Members are bound by the MII Code of Ethics and Practice and only Practitioner and Certified Members who hold a current MII practising certificate are approved by the MII to mediate.
For information on how to register for each category of membership and guidelines and detailed information on the MII Certified and Practitioner Member assessment procedures, please click the member category name above.
Mediation is becoming more mainstream and we hope that your membership of the MII will support and enable you to learn more about the use of mediation and to develop your mediation practice and skills.
MII accredited Mediators work throughout Ireland, Northern Ireland, the UK and further afield, in greatly varying areas and types of dispute resolution. Many work in private practice or in partnerships, within organisations and semi-state bodies, for community organisations and peace initiatives.
Accredited MII Mediators have a high standard of training and accreditation that meet international and professional standards. All Mediators in receipt of a current MII Practising Certificate have been subject to skills assessment, have a compulsory programme of Continuing Professional Development and are bound by the MII Code of Ethics and Practice. They are also required to have appropriate professional indemnity insurance in place and are subject to independent regulation by a majority of non-Mediators.
The MII independently assesses mediation training programmes against specific criteria based on the competencies required for the various levels of membership. For a full list of approved and equivalent training programmes, please refer to MII approved mediation training programmes,
The purpose of CPD is to ensure that Mediators keep their knowledge and skills up to date for the benefit of users of their service and for their own personal and professional development. CPD has an underlying ethical premise that asserts that clients have a right to expect competent and skilled practitioners. Thus every Mediator has a responsibility to maintain and develop knowledge and skills, and alongside the individual responsibility, lies the professional Institute's obligation to provide the means whereby this can happen.
Whether developing your skills and knowledge, engaging in reflective practise or learning how Mediation can work in your environment, there are lots of opportunities for MII Mediators, and those interested in Mediation, to engage in informative and participative forums including specific CPD trainings, Sharing and Learning groups, MII symposiums and Annual Conference.
The MII structure consists of Council, the Executive Committee, a selection of Committees with specific functions and the membership. All members at Council, Executive and Committee level give their time voluntary.
If you think you may be in a position to input or support a committee or function we would be delighted to hear from you.
