Course Details

Course Aim:

To introduce participants to the theory, process and principles of mediation in different contexts, and to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes to achieve certification to practise.

Course Objectives:

  • To enable participants to develop an understanding of the nature of conflict – causes and effects
  • To introduce participants to the process and principles underpinning the different models of mediation;
  • To enable participants to develop their mediation skill set through role-play and exercises
  • In line with theory of adult learning, trainees are encouraged to relate their acquired knowledge to the experiential
  • To create awareness of the context issues in mediating in different scenarios; ethical issues; safety issues;  professional relationships
  • To assist participants in developing the appropriate competencies as laid down by MII for certification.

Methodology and evaluation:

The course is a generic mediation training. The training applies theoretical models of mediation in a variety of settings with theoretical input and context knowledge interspersed with exercises and role-plays relevant to the particular knowledge base. The training methods include didactic presentations, role-play, case materials, group discussion, video demonstration and completion of a conflict mapping exercise  In line with theory of adult learning, participants are given feedback on their conflict exercise and their demonstration of the integration of skills and knowledge in roleplay.   Trainees are asked to evaluate each training module.

Assessment:  

Admission Requirements:  3rd level qualification and/or portfolio of experience.

  • Recorded roleplay assessed  by external assessor; self assessment and trainers. 
  • To become a Certified mediator with the Mediators' Institute of Ireland, participants must go forward for certification.  This certification is a videoed assessment where the participant demonstrates the core mediation skills through role-play of a simulated workplace conflict. The fee for assessment to become a certified mediator with the Mediators Institute of Ireland is €300.00

Bernadette Barry-Murray

Training experience: 

A training consultant with Round Table Mediation and Training, Bernadette has worked in management training for 20 years specialising in mediation skills in workplace and other life areas and in the development of high-level management training programmes.  Ber has facilitated the development of an MBA in Healthcare Management, has developed and managed programmes in Workplace Training and Development for public and private organisations and contributed to the training programme of the Family Mediation Service.

Qualifications/biog:

  • A Practitioner Member of MII
  • Holds the academic qualifications : M.Ed., BCL,BA,HDEA.
  • She is a member of the Cork Family Lawyers’ Association, and CIPD

Siun Kearney

Training experience: 

Siun is a mediation and training consultant to Round Table Mediation & Training and is involved in the preparation and presentation of training programmes,.   Siun has presented this training since 1997, updated annually, and has over twenty years experience at operational and management levels in the mediation and training field.   This experience informs the training in an experiential manner. Siun has contributed to mediation training programmes in UCC, UCD, The Law Society of Ireland, the Equality Authority the Juvenile Justice Programme and the Family Mediation Service.    Siun has presented workshops at Mediation conferences at home and abroad.

Qualifications/biog:

  • Siun a Practitioner Member of MII
  • Holds the academic qualifications :  M.Soc.Sc.,CQSW., LLB.   
  • She is an MII panel Mediator under the Civil Liabilities and Courts Act 2004
  • A member of the Cork Family Lawyers Association and CIPD.
