The Programme: Certified Mediation Training Programme 

Course Aim: 

To give participants the required level of skills, knowledge and attitudes to enable them to practice as Certified Mediators

Course Objectives:

  • To develop an understanding and knowledge of mediation theory, principles, practice and methods
  • To gain an awareness in participants of their own styles and approaches to dealing with conflict
  • To develop a theoretical understanding of conflict, managing conflict and principles of conflict resolution
  • To develop understanding of different styles and models of mediation
  • To give participants an understanding of the structures and processes involved in mediation
  • To raise awareness of the external context of mediation i.e. role in dispute resolution, working with other professionals, ethical dilemmas etc.
  • To raise awareness of the influence of one’s own professional and personal assumptions and biases on the mediation process
  • To develop effective skills, knowledge and attitudes in mediation to meet the certified assessment requirements
  • To give participants an opportunity to practice skills in simulated role plays
  • To develop confidence and ability in participants and enable them to practice as certified mediators on completion of the course


Training will be based on principles of adult learning and of accelerated learning and involve didactic presentations, interactive group discussion, video demonstrations, simulated role plays  as well as participants completing required reading and submitting relevant written assignment.

Assessment: Essay assignment (3,000) words and MII Role play.

Admission requirements: 3rd level qualifications and/or relevant portfolio of experience.

Senior Trainer: Mary Rafferty, B. Education, M.Sc., Practitioner Mediator MII, Accredited Conflict Coach.

 MARY is the founder of Consensus Mediation, a Consultancy offering a range of services and interventions to support people to prevent, engage and manage conflict and difficult relationships at work. 


Mary is an accredited Practitioner Mediator with the Mediators Institute Ireland (M.I.I.), has 300 + hours of mediation experience. She also holds certification with the

International Mediation Institute.

 Mary also lectures on the Workplace Module on the M.A. in Dispute Resolution at Independent College, Dublin 

Mary is certified in the internationally renowned and innovative CINERGY™ Conflict

Management Coaching Model.  She is also a licensed member of the international team of Approved CINERGY™ trainers and has delivered the signature 4-day Conflict Management Coaching Programme both in Ireland and abroad. 

Mary runs an M.I.I. Approved Mediation Training Programme to Certified Level. Consensus Mediation is a registered Open College Network training centre. 

Mary is also certified to administer the Conflict Dynamics Profile (Eckerd College, Florida), an assessment instrument dealing with conflict behaviors in the workplace

which provides a powerful way to improve self-awareness of what triggers conflict in individuals as well as how they respond to conflict. 


Mary is a former Director of the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland. As former Chairperson

of the M.I.I. Conference Committee she has played a leading role in organising the annual M.I.I. national mediation conferences since 2008. 

Mary is also a member of the M.I.I. Ethics and Standards Committee and a member of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association, Ireland.

Mary holds an Honours Degree in Education, a Master’s Degree with Distinction in


Social Science and has attended a wide variety of specialised trainings in the field of conflict resolution.
