There are 4 categories of MII member:

General Member

Membership Type: General
Qualification requirements: No training or qualifications necessary
Further Clarification: None required

Associate member

Membership Type: Associate: Not entitled to practicing certificate nor to have profile on MII website
Qualification requirements: Attendance at 60 hour MII approved or equivalent course.
Further Clarification: No skills assessment required.

Certified member

Membership Type: Entitled to apply annually for a practicing certificate. Entitled to have profile featured on web in Find a Mediator section on MII website
Qualification requirements:

1. Satisfactory completion of 60 hour MII approved or equivalent course
2. (a) Satisfactory MII approved assessment of role play*
or
(b) Satisfactory assessment in accordance with MII Certified Member competencies by 15 hours co-mediation**
3. Select a sector as your "home" sector
4. Sign acceptance of the Code of Ethics

Further Clarification: *2 (a) The MII or equivalent course may provide role play assessment or MII will provide 2 assessment days a year.
**compulsory for family mediation route

Practitioner Member

Membership Type: Practitioner: Entitled to apply annually for a practicing certificate. Entitled to have profile featured on web in Find a Mediator section on MII website.
Qualification requirements:
  1. 100 hours of actual mediationA including pre- and post-mediation (of which there must be at least 6B mediations of which at least 3 must be to agreement ).

    or

    An MII Approved Practitioner course* (details below) plus 75 hours actual mediation experience of which there must be at least 3C mediations

    and

  2. Attend 3 sharing and learning meetings
  3. Present a case at one Sharing and Learning group
  4. Attend 6 sessions with a case consultant / supervisor
  5. Maintain a log of mediations - Mediation Log
  6. Pass an interview assessmentE on 3 mediations
Further Clarification:

A Family require a minimum of 100 hours face-to-face mediation; Community require a minimum of 100 hours of mediaiton experience of which at least 17 hours must be face-to-face mediation as solo Mediator or Co-Mediator.
B Family require 12 mediations of which 8 must be couples with at least 4 to agreement; Community require 8 mediations with at least 4 to agreement.
C 4 in Community of which 2 must be co-mediations; 6 in Family.
D 4 case submissions for assessment of Family Mediators. Family also require live observation of one case by an MII Practitioner Member (not the Supervisor) and satisfactory completion and sign off of a Family Mediation Accreditation Journal with an approved Supervisor.
E Agreed option for Mediators working in Civil and Commercial, Community or Organisation and Workplace practice.

 

Note: In addition to the above, progression through the Family route requires a mandatory MII approved 64-hours of specific case knowledge.

*An MII Approved or equivalent 60 hour Practitioner training course which must include 3 role plays (4 in Community; 6 in Family).
