President's Address

Good Morning. I hope you have all had a good summer.

In the MII we have been tracking references in the media to mediation and I am delighted to inform you that there are references to mediation being used almost daily now. This is right across the board – from community to workplace, commercial and family. This is great news for Mediators and parties alike. With downward pressure on expenditure, mediation is the obvious answer for quicker, cheaper and more effective dispute resolution.

MII Annual Conference 2011

The theme for Conference 2011 is 'Embedding Mediation in our Dispute Resolution Culture'. 

With less than two months to go, preparations are being finalised for the thirteenth Mediators’ Institute of Ireland, Annual Conference, which will take place in The Grand Hotel, Malahide, Dublin on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th November.

Local Co-ordinator Sought for European Mediation Network Initiative

The European Mediation Network Initiative (EMNI) seeks a Local Coordinator for Ireland. This voluntary role, which is a two-year position, will entail working closely with the MII Board Member of EMNI in the gathering and dissemination of information about mediation in Ireland.

Editors' Note

This edition of the MII Ezine has been a joint editorial effort – we hope that you find it interesting.

The emphaisis for this edition is on workplace mediation with a number of articles looking at our public service, our statutory mechanisms for dispute resolution in the workplace and the value of workplace mediation. We also include articles on a recent UK Court decision compelling a Mediator to give evidence, the upcoming MII Annual Conference and the role of Local Coordinator for Ireland for the EMNI.

Our next edition will be issued in December and will include the following:
