I
hope you are all enjoying the good weather - it makes difficult things
so much more pleasant when the sun shines. As you will see from the
articles below, there is a lot happening in relation to mediation, and
it is becoming more a more an integral part of how we both prevent and
resolve issues whether between individuals, groups, business interests
or indeed at national or international level.
This is reflected in our changing legislation and the growing need
for more transparent standards and quality in mediation.

Mediation: A European Perspective
Europe,
an area with a population in access of 700 million, has many strong
organisations working to promote mediation; The Mediators’ Institute of
Ireland (The MII) is one of those organisations. As part of our
Strategic Plan 2009-2015, the MII aims to be a major influencer, not
only in relation to mediation on the island of Ireland, but also in
Europe and internationally.

Legal Aid Board in Support of Wider Use of
Mediation
In
her article on the Law Matters page of the Irish Times on Monday 21
June, Anne Colley, Chairperson of the Legal Aid Board,
adds another authoritative voice to the growing need for greater use of

Empowering Creativity in Mediation
Mediators
accept that little progress can be made without actively engaging their
own and their client’s creativity. Few will disagree on the merit of
terms like flexibility, optimism, possibility and transformation.
Although such words are full of upbeat energy, these qualities are often
eclipsed in the throes of a negotiation, especially one that has become
mired in multi-layered hurts and disagreement.

MII Annual Conference 2010
The
theme for Conference 2010 is 'Towards a Requisite Variety
of Mediation'.
To survive and prosper every system needs variety and difference, and
this year’s theme focuses on embracing a diversity of approaches and
thinking; only then can we strengthen our capacity to deal with ever
more complex conflict situations and build the ‘robust fitness’ we need
as Mediators and conflict practitioners, to assist people in creating
agreement.
