Skills, Techniques & Strategies to enhance your mediation/coaching practice
As mediators we develop a unique approach based on our own training, experience and personal qualities. Over this online workshop series, you will identify your key strengths and capabilities providing a sharper focus to your mediation practice. You will gain new insights and the opportunity to reflect on and practice key interpersonal skills required during the mediation process. This online workshop series is experiential and interactive with plenty of opportunity for group discussion.
This is a series of 4 online interactive workshops with practical exercises, examples and group discussion.
Mediation role play
Mediation role plays are an integral part of these workshops and will include pre-mediation, co-mediation and group mediation in a variety of contexts to allow you to continue to develop your practice. You will get meaningful feedback on interventions that you make, how effective they are and points for reflection. There will also be an opportunity for peer review from fellow mediators.

Workshop1: Thursday 23rd September 2021
Communication skills are crucial to success both in your personal and professional life whether it is in influencing others, explaining yourself concisely or in developing emotional intelligence. You will get the opportunity on this workshop to explore different styles of communication through group discussion and mediation role play. You will learn how to deal with angry, difficult and manipulative clients and how to move the mediation process forward when clients reach an impasse.
Workshop2: Thursday 7th October 2021
Developing your practice through NLP
Neuro Linguistic Programming is a psychological approach to how we think, communicate and behave. In this workshop you will learn how to use NLP skills including developing the business side of your mediation practice. You will use techniques such as goal setting, challenging limiting beliefs and achieving well-formed outcomes. You will have the opportunity to develop an actionable plan with specific goals and clear deadlines for a chosen aspect of your personal or professional life.
Workshop3: Thursday 21st October 2021
Active Listening, Incisive Questioning and Mediated Agreements
Listening – the quality of people’s attention for each other – is the core of this workshop. Most people think they listen well but they rarely do. When you apply active listening skills it can dramatically improve the way all parties think and behave during a mediation and bring about transformative change of the highest quality. On this workshop you will learn how to achieve this through a step-by-step guide that can be used in any situation. You will gain an understanding of mediation agreements and what they look like including dos and don’ts. You will also learn how to ask incisive questions and apply techniques to elicit more information to support and assist the mediation process.
Workshop4: Thursday 4th November 2021
Assertiveness, Aggressiveness and the Shadow Self
In this workshop you will explore through group discussion and mediation role play the different ways in which assertiveness can facilitate the mediation process. This can be both through strategic interventions and modelling appropriate behaviour.
There are 7 different ways of being assertive, and once you know how to apply these, you can increase your effectiveness as a mediator. This is a skill that when developed can be used to great effect in both your personal and professional life.
You will learn how to deal with and differentiate between aggressive and assertive behaviour. You will also learn how to maintain impartiality by recognising your ‘shadow self’ which contains unresolved aspects of your personality and in this way developing strategies for dealing with your ‘triggers’ and ‘hot buttons’.

About the Trainer
Brian O’Connell has wide experience as an Advanced Mediation Practitioner, Conflict Management Coach, N.L.P. Master Practitioner, Mind Coach, Trainer, Mentor, College Lecturer and Facilitator. He has integrated mediation skills with mind coaching, neuro linguistic programming & conflict management coaching to offer an effective and practical approach to enable mediators and coaches to enhance their professional practice.
