The purpose of CPD is to ensure that Mediators keep their knowledge and skills up to date for the benefit of users of their service and for their own personal and professional development. CPD has an underlying ethical premise that asserts that clients have a right to expect competent and skilled practitioners. Thus every Mediator has a responsibility to maintain and develop knowledge and skills, and alongside the individual responsibility, lies the professional Institute's obligation to provide the means whereby this can happen. Most professional bodies acknowledge that CPD is a commitment to lifelong learning with an emphasis on 'home skills', thus for the MII, the emphasis is on mediation skills. The MII requires that all practising Members complete a minimum of CPD hours and has agreed a CPD points system.

The S Questions Model has been developed by Gerry O’Sullivan and is introduced and developed in her book - ‘The Mediator’s Toolkit: Formulating and Asking Questions for Successful Outcomes’, published by New Society Publishing, Canada, 2018. This book will be provided for course participants, as well as a Course Workbook.
Training Aims
The aim is that participants will learn how to formulate and ask incisive questions to introduce new information, clarify existing information and safely challenge and shift any entrenched thinking of parties in mediation. This is the key to reaching successful and sustainable mediation agreements.
Training Objectives
· To introduce, describe and explain the purpose and focus of the S Questions Model so that participants will be able to implement the theoretical learning in practice.
· To demonstrate the use of the S Questions Model through filmed roleplayed examples to embed the practical application of its learning.
· To radically sharpen, focus, and improve the questioning skills of the participants so that their work with mediation parties will affect a shift in parties’ thinking and approach to their conflict.

The Conflict Dynamics Profile (CDP) – Certification Workshop
10% Discount for all MII Members
Delivered by: OAK Conflict Dynamics Ltd
Date: Tuesday 5th May 2020
Venue: The Royal Marine Hotel, Dunlaoghaire
‘CDP is an invaluable part of every mediator’s toolkit and an additional service offering for your clients’
Become a CDP certified practitioner – learn about how you respond behaviourally and emotionally in conflict and how to positively influence the conflict behaviours of others
The Conflict Dynamics Profile (CDP), an assessment instrument, measuring conflict behaviours, is an excellent resource to increase self-awareness and improve conflict management skills. The CDP is unlike any other assessment tool in that it focuses specifically on conflict behaviours, rather than styles. It helps mediators to be aware of their own emotional triggers, to avoid becoming reactive within mediation but also how to positively influence the conflict behaviours of others.
Three versions of the instrument—the CDP-Individual (CDP-I), the CDP – Team and CDP-360— emphasize an action-oriented approach which leads to real improvement. A thorough Development Guide provides information and tips for coping with conflict and building strong interpersonal relationships.
Use the CDP assessment tool to enhance your own self-awareness and skills as a mediator and also those of your clients.
This one-day Certification Workshop is designed to train participants in the application and interpretation of the CDP-I and CDP-Team assessment tools, leading to Certification.
Further training is available for practitioners wishing to certify in the use of the CDP-360.
What Participants Gain
Recognised Credits
ü 14 Continuing Professional Development Points as approved by the Mediators Institute of Ireland
ü 14 Continuing Education Units as approved by the International Coach Federation (1 ICF Core Competencies and 6 Resource Development)
About CDP
CDP-Individual
As a “self-report,” the (CDP-I) looks at how you view yourself. It provides a simple way of helping you understand more about how you respond to conflict behaviourally, both constructively and destructively. It also identifies your emotional triggers that negatively impact on relationships. In doing this you also learn how to recognise these patterns in others, thereby enhancing your mediation skills.
CDP- Team
The CDP is particularly helpful in team settings. In addition to each individual report, a group report can be generated that outlines team behaviours and responses. This report often opens up the door for effective conversations about acceptable responses to conflict and hot button triggers. Members of the team learn how certain behaviours might inadvertently trigger irritation in their colleagues as well as how to avoid pushing these hot buttons.
CDP-360
The CDP-360 enables you to compare your own perceptions about how you behave during conflict with those of your colleagues. It provides a complete “conflict profile” with feedback from bosses, peers, and direct reports. The CDP-360 is particularly helpful for leaders, managers, and high-potential employees for whom conflict can be particularly challenging. The CDP-360 is the subject of an additional workshop and not included in this one-day workshop.
CDP Benefits
Using CDP in Mediation
The CDP can be used in numerous ways by mediators. It is an invaluable tool in expanding personal awareness of emotional triggers and potential destructive responses which every mediator seeks to avoid within the mediation process. It also provides a deeper level of understanding of the patterns of behaviour and interpersonal dynamics that mediators are challenged to manage in mediation and how to positively influence the conflict behaviours of parties.
The CDP is also an excellent pre-mediation tool which can be used effectively to prepare parties for mediation. It provides them with greater clarity in relation to those behaviours of others that trigger them into conflict and clearly demonstrates the choices they can make in whether they can respond constructively or destructively to the conflict within which they find themselves. It enables you as mediator to focus the parties on behaviours rather than on personalities.
When mediating with teams, the CDP can be particularly helpful. It often opens the door for effective conversations about acceptable responses to conflict and emotional triggers. Members of the team learn how certain behaviours might inadvertently trigger irritation in their colleagues as well as how to avoid pushing these hot buttons and behave constructively.

What Other Say About Us
‘I have found CDP to be an invaluable tool that brings new depth to the mediation process, enabling participants in situations of conflict to also explore their own internal conflict dynamics. This shift in self-focus can be an invaluable component in conflict resolution, both for the mediator and for the parties in conflict. Used in a team setting, CDP can potentially bring to the surface new insights into aspects of team or organisational culture that may otherwise have remained unseen. CDP is robust, responsive, adaptable and capable of encompassing diversity, each individual profile reflecting a unique perspective.
CDP is a skill that can be taught, and learned, opening minds and hearts to greater awareness, as well as delivering results that are practical, measurable and visible. In the very capable hands OAK, its potential is magnified as they have the skills to detect, explore and reveal new insights for the user. This awareness is the key to rebalancing one’s perspective. The experience resembles taking a photograph from the inside-out, and self-adjusting one’s focus to obtain the desired outcome (perhaps one that might previously have proven elusive or beyond reach). I have found from experience that the blueprint of one’s behaviour, post-CDP, illuminates subsequent action and enables informed choice on the path to change’.
Anna Doyle, Certified CDP Consultant, EUROCONTROL, Agency Mediator & Agency Ethics Officer (Standard disclaimer: The views expressed are the author’s own and are not necessarily endorsed by EUROCONTROL or its senior management).
‘I found the Workshop to be well structured and comfortably paced. The facilitators are hugely experienced both in terms of usage of CDP and generally in terms of conflict prevention and management. I left confident that I could and would use CDP in my Mediation practice as it provides valuable insights for those undertaking the self-assessment as it does for those administering it. Two well spent days!’
Loughlin Quinn, Certified CDP Consultant, Construction Contracts Adjudication Service & Civil and Public Service Mediation Service Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.
