I believe that it is especially effective in situations where the parties are required to work together in the future such as co-parenting, employer/employee relationships, neighbourhood disputes, and commercial disputes. Mediation, unlike litigation, allows the disputants to be properly heard - it has the ability to heal relationships and therefore can often have a preferable result.
