    Course Information

    The course is delivered by one of the most experienced workplace mediators and trainers in Ireland.
    The focus is pragmatic and practical and trains you how to mediate, in a hands-on and enjoyable manner. Course includes trainer input, group discussion, learning activities, case studies and role plays, and academic models.
    There are two modules, the first teaches you how to mediate while the second considers mediation in a wider context including underlying useful theory and models of conflict.
    Completion of both modules leads to a TU Dublin Diploma in addition to MII accreditation, while completion of the first module alone leads to MII accreditation.

    Course Objectives
    • To introduce participants to the concept of mediation and its use in settling arguments, disputes and conflict
    • To develop an understanding of the process of mediation and the various tasks involved in each step
    • To understand the principles involved in effective mediation
    • To learn and practice a range of skills for effective conflict resolution

    Methodology

    The approach of this 12 day Diploma workshop will be highly interactive and practical. Participants will be encouraged to express their views and to discuss their own experience.

    • The Presenter is an experienced practitioner who will relate the learning to real life conflict
    • The use of practical exercises, case studies and role plays will ensure a high degree of participation and self-learning
    • A flexible approach will be used throughout and priority will be given to the interests and learning of the group
    Target Audience

    The Diploma is suitable for participants who are looking to improve their knowledge and skills in the area of mediation, whilst gaining both an academic and accredited professional qualification. It would suit those with an interest in strategic management, employee relations, operations, supplier management, and particularly customer and staff relations.

    Quality Standards

    This course is fully accredited by the Mediators Institute of Ireland Member level  and has academic accreditation by TU Dublin. It has been running for twenty years and is presented twice a year through IBEC
    (Applicants for MII Membership must pass an MII Skills Assessment in addition to completing the training)

    The course is split into two main modules:

    1. Mediation and the Organisation

    2. Mediation Process and Skills

    An essential part of the course will be a short project which should be completed within three months of the end of the programme.

    Following a successful career in Human Resource Management over 20 years, Brendan set up Catalyst Consulting in 2000 and consults to a wide range of clients on a diverse mix of projects covering the full
    span of people management, training and organisation development. Projects include workplace mediation, investigation, organisational structuring, advice and mentoring, facilitation, team building,
    coaching and training design & delivery.
    As an Advanced Member of the Mediators Institute of Ireland he has offered professional workplace mediation since starting the consultancy and is a recognised and accredited trainer with MII. He has
    delivered numerous  ‘Skills of Mediation’ courses, both in-house and in public programmes , as well as shorter conflict resolution courses and speaking at conferences.

    Other qualifications include B.Comm., PDip Ind Rels, PDip Med Studs (1st Place), FCIPD, MSc.(HR Leadership).

    Author of the only book on workplace mediation in Ireland:
    “Fixing the Fighting. A guide to using mediation in settling disputes and resolving conflict in the workplace.” (Oak Tree Press, Cork. 2003).

    Course Structure:

    Hours: 84 hours (in-course training), 16 hours (outside training)
    Venue: Dublin
    Course Timings: Over 12 days with optional extra certification day
    Numbers on course: Typically 8-10
    Cost: Course is run via Ibec Academy and their prices can vary. Current price is €3,200 for the Cert and €4,070 for the Diploma. They also give a discount for Ibec members.

    Jan 20/21, Feb 17/18, Mar 10/11, Apr 14/15 (finishing course begun in 2025)

    Normal hours are 9.30am to 5pm with short lunch break.

    • Optional MII role play assessment once the first module is complete – successfully passing leads to member status in MII. A short project and learning log are requirements for passing the first module, while a group project, learning logs and written examination are requirements for passing the second module.
